Artist Noah Scalin Inspired by VACEOs, Creates Art for Retreat
Noah Scalin is an artist, author, and activist. His fine art has been exhibited in museums and galleries internationally, including the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Virginia Museum of History and Culture, and Krause Gallery in New York City, to name a few. His firm, Another Limited Rebellion, provides executive education and professional development training for GE, Capital One, Mozilla, Altria and others.
Inspired by his work and art, we asked him to develop something for Retreat 2019. The resulting artwork is vibrant and truly amazing. He created a time-lapse video for us, but we wanted to know more. See our Q&A session with him below.
Q&A SESSION WITH NOAH SCALIN
Q: What was the inspiration behind the VACEOs Retreat design?
A: The design came out of a conversation about what would best represent the organization visually. It made sense that we focus in on the CEO Roundtables and also on the interconnectedness of the diverse membership through events like this annual Retreat. In addition, we wanted to make sure we showed the vibrant creativity of the VACEOs community.
Q: What materials and technique did you use, and how long did it take to create this piece of artwork?
A: The work is created from hundreds of commercially produced stickers, the kind that is often given to children to celebrate their success in school or other activities. Creating imagery from these diverse elements is a technique I’ve developed over the last several years after getting inspiration from seeing my own daughter play with stickers when she was 2 years old. I loved how she ignored the images and instead created these beautiful collages out of the random combination of elements. This piece took around ten hours to produce.
A: The finished piece will become part of my larger body of work that I’m making with stickers – including other abstract pieces, images of birds, portraits of people, and historic events. Hopefully it’ll eventually be on display in a museum or gallery sometime soon!

Clair Norman is the Assistant Executive Director at the Cameron K. Gallagher Foundation whose efforts focus on programming and mindfulness expansion. A former director of marketing for a local hospital system, she holds certifications and advanced training in mindfulness from Mindful Schools and UC San Diego’s Center for Mindfulness. Clair is a certified yoga instructor actively teaching to teens and their influencers and also in the corporate environment. Clair is sister to Grace Gallagher, Executive Director of CKG Foundation. Q: DOES MY MEMBERSHIP INCLUDE ENTRY INTO THE RETREAT?
A: Yes. Your VACEOs Membership includes a ticket to this special yearly event where Members are able to learn and connect with national thought leaders and each other. (And have some fun too!)
Q. WHAT DOES REGISTRATION INCLUDE?
A: Members who attend the Retreat have a one-of-a-kind opportunity to learn from national keynote speakers and take advantage of various leadership workshops. Meals and planned program activities from Wednesday night to Friday mid-day are also included for Members.
Membership does not include hotel rooms/expenses or activities outside of those offered within the program. Visit the 2019 Retreat Registration page for a detailed listing of the activities available at this year’s event.
Q: THE FIRST SPEAKER STARTS ON THURSDAY MORNING. SHOULD I COME WEDNESDAY NIGHT?
A: Yes! Do consider coming in on Wednesday. This year we will have a Block Party at the River Cottages Wednesday night. You don’t want to miss that. And during day there are special activities like golf, or to maximize your time making connections, choose one of the group activities planned that day.

Q: DO I NEED TO BOOK A ROOM?
A: Yes. As soon as possible! We have a block of rooms reserved through April 17. Use the special group link found in your confirmation to make your reservation.
Q: SHOULD I BRING MY SPOUSE OR SIGNIFICANT OTHER?
A: The Retreat program is designed just for members and sponsors. We recommend that you immerse yourself. After all, this is a business retreat. We will have guest tickets for our two evening social events. Some folks have their spouse join them on Friday afternoon for an extra night or two of R&R. We have a reception Friday night just for the “lingerers.”
Q: IS THERE A DRESS CODE?
A: Not really. Let’s call it business casual or resort casual. Relax and be comfortable.
Q: I’VE ARRIVED AT KINGSMILL. NOW WHAT?
A: If you arrive Wednesday, please check in the hotel, (time permitting), before you make your way to the group activity you’ve registered for or take advantage of other resort amenities, such as the spa. For those who wish to reserve a tennis court or play bocce ball, there will be a list in the Retreat app with contact information of other Members who are interested.
If you arrive Thursday morning, we will officially welcome you at the Retreat Registration desk located outside the James River Ballroom at 8:30 am.
